Beach Cleanup at James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi

About Monthly Small Kine Cleanups:

Each month, on the 2nd Thursday, Sustainable Coastlines Hawai‘i will host a beach cleanup in Kahuku. We will always host the event at the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge.

For the National Wildlife Refuge, you must meet at the gate by 9:15 AM, as no cars will be let in after the gates close at 9:30 AM. The cleanups will focus on the large amounts of marine debris that consistently accumulate on O‘ahu’s northeast shores.

The cleanup will go on until 11:30 and then we will make our way back to the Kahuku Sugar Mill. If you would like to be part of our science team, you will also be offered lunch if you are willing to stay for another 2 hours (from 12-2:30 PM) to help us sort and categorize the debris that we find. Please follow all instructions for working in this very special and fragile space. We are working around endangered plants and animals and thus need to take precautions not to disturb or harm these ecosystems.

Please bring:

*A full reusable water bottle

*Sun protection (reef-safe sunscreen, hat)

*Rain Jacket

*Sturdy shoes/footwear

*SCH will provide all the tools that you need for the cleanup.

Be advised: There are no restrooms at the wildlife refuge, so please try to plan accordingly as much as possible.
