Time of arrival is 9:25am (workers cannot wait for late-comers who
sometimes do not show up). Crew works until 4:00pm
Site parking is located at junction of Highway 130 and Upper Puna Rd.
between Pahoa town and Kalapana, (between the 16-17 mile marker).
On the day of the event, please be prepared with long clothes, sturdy
shoes/boots, hat, gloves, rain gear, and plenty of drinking water, and a
lunch for a full volunteer day.
Please register with Jaya at dupuis@hawaii.edu for this volunteer
opportunity, and fill out a waiver on the volunteer page of
HER website hawaiienvironmentalrestoration.org.
The forest of Keau’ohana has been hit by Rapid ‘Ohi’a Death (ROD) therefore
some sections have minimal canopy; sun hats and water are important items.
This is a forest environment without facilities; ground is uneven/ crumbly ‘a’a
substrate requiring rugged outdoor shoes/boots. Walking sticks are
encouraged for those with less stable footing as it is best not to rely upon the
native plant species for balance.
In case of an incident, there is an Emergency Clinic in Pahoa town less than
5m away though we do have CPR/First Aid Certification.
